Right on cue for the summer season, Breitling has unveiled a collection of colorful dive watches to get you in the mood for sun, surf, and sand. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Skittles-like dial from Breitling — it appeared in the Superocean Heritage ’57 lineup a few years back — but it is the first time it’s been paired with Superocean Automatic models. Available in two sizes, two metals, and a handful of colorful rubber straps, there are five Breitling Superocean Automatic 42 and 36 rainbow-dial watches on offer.

Characteristic of the new-gen but vintage-inspired Superocean Automatic collection that debuted in 2022, the dials include a prominent minute scale on the periphery, thick hour markers, and paddle-shaped minute hands. However, the rainbow treatment comes in the form of an array of Super-LumiNova shades — yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, red, and orange — that coat the hands and indexes.

Aside from the freshly minted white and black dials with rainbow accents, these new Superocean Automatic 42 models are identical to the ones already in the catalog. This is to say they sport 42mm cases (12.56mm thick and 47.76mm lug-to-lug) that are water resistant to 300 meters. Breitling opted to make all the rainbow editions in stainless steel, accompanied by ratcheted bezels with black ceramic inlays. Playing up the vibrant dials are the equally splashy rubber straps, available in turquoise (ref. A17375211B2S1), aquamarine (ref. A17375211B2S2), orange (ref. A17375211B2S), and yellow (ref. A17375211B2S4), all fitted with stainless steel folding clasps.

If the 42mm models represent a packed sandy coast dotted with multi-colored umbrellas, beach balls, and towels, then to my eye, the Superocean Automatic 36 (ref. U17377211A1S1) is more akin to a luxe poolside experience, lounging in cabanas with white drapes billowing in the wind while sipping on some chilled bubbly.  The 36mm stainless steel case (12.21mm thick, 42.41mm lug-to-lug, and 300m water resistant) is topped with an 18k red gold bezel, inlaid with white ceramic. There’s also a red gold winding crown. The all-white dial includes the same gradient lume-coated hands and indices but they don’t seem to pop as loudly as those sitting on the black background. Rounding out the petite version is the matching white rubber strap with a stainless-steel folding clasp.

Inside the cases of the Superocean Automatic 42 and 36 rainbow-dial watches are the COSC-certified Caliber 17 automatic movements (based on ETA 2824-2) that beat 28,800 times an hour and supply around 38 hours of power reserve.
